Verification, qualification or certification?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Verification checks basic wiring. Qualification assesses support for a stated network application. Certification measures an installed link against a selected cabling standard and test limit. Choose the level from the job’s acceptance requirement: a continuity pass does not certify Cat6 or Cat6A, and the tester’s brand does not define the test level.

Verification, qualification or certification: what does each prove?

Verification checks the wiring, qualification assesses support for a stated network application, and certification compares a link with a selected cabling standard and limit. These levels answer different questions. A wiremap result may be part of a more capable test, but it does not independently establish bandwidth or category compliance.

LevelQuestion answeredImportant limit
VerificationAre the conductors connected correctly?Split-pair, shield and distance functions depend on the model.
QualificationCan this link support the selected application or rate under the test method?Does not replace the full standards-based certification test set.
CertificationDoes the link meet the selected category/Class limit?Only meaningful with the correct link model, limits, adapters and equipment configuration.

Wiremap is a test, not a separate guarantee of transmission performance. More capable instruments also perform wiremap as part of their test sequence.

What does a verification tester actually do?

Basic testers identify opens, shorts and mapping errors. Better models may detect split pairs, test shield continuity, measure approximate length, or send a tone. Those extra functions do not turn a verifier into a certifier. Confirm the supported faults and permitted connection state in the manual for the exact instrument.

Check the precise specification. Klein’s VDV526-200, for example, lists split-pair detection and is intended for unpowered/dark cabling. That does not establish the same capability or connection safety for a different Klein model.

What is qualification useful for?

Qualification helps decide whether an existing run is suitable for a specified network application, and helps isolate faults that a simple continuity check cannot describe. The measurement method and supported rates vary by instrument. Qualification does not replace the full test set needed to certify an installed link against the specified cabling standard.

Do not treat a switch advertising gigabit, a laptop negotiating a link, or an internet speed test as the equivalent of a qualification instrument. Each provides a different piece of evidence.

What should a certification report contain?

A certification instrument measures the parameters required by the selected test limit, such as insertion loss, near-end crosstalk and return loss across the relevant frequency range. The standard and edition should match the project specification; British projects may reference BS EN or ISO/IEC requirements.

  • Link ID tied to the outlet and patch-panel labels.
  • Selected category/Class, standard, test limit and date.
  • Permanent-link or channel configuration, with the right adapters.
  • Tester identity, software information and applicable calibration records.
  • Individual results, failures, remedial work and subsequent retests.

Testing a Cat6A installation against a Cat6 limit does not establish Cat6A compliance. A screenshot saying PASS is insufficient when the limit and link identity are missing.

Permanent link or channel: what is included in the test?

The permanent link is the fixed cabling between the patch panel and telecommunications outlet, including relevant fixed connections. A channel includes the equipment/patch cords within that configuration. Use the link model and test method agreed for the installation, with the correct adapters and the corresponding test limit.

Changing removable patch leads after permanent-link certification can introduce a new fault without disproving the earlier fixed-link result. Keep handover records and operational troubleshooting records together, with their different scopes made clear.

Which test level does the job require?

For finding a wrongly terminated outlet, start with the required verification capability. For reusing a cable at a particular network rate, consider qualification. For contractual acceptance or a cabling warranty, establish the certification requirement before work begins; rental or a qualified test provider may be more practical than buying equipment.

A certified cable is one part of a network. Certification does not validate VLANs, DHCP, Wi-Fi coverage, internet service or the camera application.

What else should you check before relying on the result?

A test result is useful only within the instrument’s documented capability and the setup used for that measurement. Check the exact model, permitted connection state and acceptance requirement before acting on a PASS. The questions below clarify common assumptions that can otherwise turn a useful observation into an unsupported conclusion.

Can a tester labelled CAT6 certify Cat6?

Not from that label alone. Compatibility with Cat6 cables is different from performing the required certification measurements against a Cat6 limit.

Does every new installation need certification?

The project specification, contract and any cabling-system warranty determine the acceptance requirement. Agree it before installation, rather than assuming a continuity check will satisfy it.

Which sources support this guide, and what are their limits?

These references support the distinctions and troubleshooting methods described above. Manufacturer capabilities apply to the named model and operating mode; external cases describe the author’s reported observations. Neither is presented as a WireTrace UK measurement. References were checked on 22 September 2026, and project requirements still govern any acceptance test.

KEEP A RECORD OF THE FIX

What should you record for the next visit?

Record the original symptom, equipment models, cable details, connection state and measurement method alongside the result. After a repair, repeat the conditions that produced the problem and save the retest. The blank field record helps keep expected behaviour separate from observed readings; it contains no example values that could be mistaken for measurements.
