Testers & tools

Know what a PASS actually proves.

Choose tools by their documented capabilities and the job’s acceptance requirement. Model names and feature counts are not enough.

Which capability does your job require?

Choose the instrument from the evidence you need to produce: wiring correctness, support for a network application, or compliance with a cabling standard. Then check the exact model’s supported faults, connection restrictions and reporting functions. Tracing, length measurement and PoE identification are additional capabilities; their presence does not turn a basic verifier into a certifier.

  1. Define the required outcome: fault finding, application support or formal certification.
  2. Check the exact model, manual, test mode and required adapters.
  3. For PoE faults, distinguish supply identification from measurements under load.

Which related test could help next?

Use the related guides to check another part of the diagnosis once the first comparison is complete. Wiring, application support and power delivery are different questions, so a result in one area may leave another unresolved. Select the next test from the remaining symptom, rather than treating every PASS as a complete answer.

Which references support these checks?

The references below support the terminology, documented tool capabilities and external cases used in this category. Manufacturer information applies to the named instrument; a published case records another author’s observations. Follow the linked guide for the relevant scope and limitations, and use the project specification to determine any required acceptance test.
